Our Maths curriculum enables children to have the opportunity to explore number, shape and space and measures through games, puzzles and investigations. We encourage children to look for patterns and justify their understanding. Teachers ensure that the children secure mathematical knowledge at each stage, building up a body of knowledge, methods, processes, concepts and uses for mathematics as they progress through school. Maths teaches the children beneficial life skills that can be used in the wider world such as leadership, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and logical thinking.
Formal written calculations and mental calculations are taught throughout the school. We aim to develop a repertoire of methods that children are able to select from when faced with problem solving activities. Mathematics is taught using a variety of different strategies to enable children to become fluent in their mathematical knowledge. It also enables the children to give reasons and demonstrate their knowledge in practical ways, using mathematical vocabulary to explain their predictions and ideas, as well as using this knowledge to solve problems.
Our aim is to ensure children think and act as mathematicians through effective communication of their mathematical understanding. At Middle Park children learn all about the ever-changing world around them in readiness and preparation for a career beyond school. Mathematics is linked across the wider curriculum to range of subjects and forms part of our STEM learning. (Science, technology, engineering and maths) Providing these links gives our children a holistic STEM learning experience.
